Metcalfe, the 106th county established in Kentucky, was named in honor of Kentucky’s 10th governor, Thomas Metcalfe.

Edmonton, the county seat of Metcalfe County, is strategically located on the multi-lane Louis B. Nunn Cumberland Parkway, which provides easy access to the interstate highway system. The city had an estimated population of 1,586 in 2010. Edmonton is situated in south central Kentucky, 113 miles south of Louisville, Kentucky; 124 miles from Lexington, Kentucky and 112 miles from Nashville, Tennessee. Metcalfe County contains a land area of 296 square miles.

Edmonton is served by U.S. Highway 68 and Kentucky Routes 80 and 163, all AAA-rated trucking highways. An interchange of the Cumberland Parkway, a multi-lane toll road, is located two miles west of the city. Interstate 65 is accessible 29 miles via the Cumberland Parkway. Kentucky routes 496 and 533 also serve the Edmonton area. Twelve trucking companies provide interstate and/or intrastate service to Edmonton. CSX Transportation provides the nearest rail service, near Glasgow, 16 miles west of Edmonton. The nearest scheduled commercial airline service is available at Louisville International Airport, Nashville International Airport and Lexington's Blue Grass Airport, all within 120 miles of Edmonton. Moore Field, near Glasgow, maintains a 4,586 foot paved runway.​​
